| Public wants input on Carroll police unit
There is no appreciable difference between the cost to run a future unified sheriff's department and the cost to operate a county police department," Powell said. Sheriff Kenneth L. Tregoning said he has urged county commissioners for 21 years to create a law enforcement master plan, which has not been done. Suddenly there is a sense of urgency to get somewhere without any plan in place, he said. For several years, he has pushed for his department to assume primary responsibility for law enforcement in the county. "There is no sound reason that the county is going forward at this speedy and reckless pace to dismantle the sheriff's department," Tregoning said. "Here they want to change the entire face of law enforcement, and they have not had one public meeting. I find that disgraceful," he said.

We even have a new full-time HSA support person in each high school. It's crazy. Watch the BoE wrestle with setting the academic calendar sometime, as they try to accommodate everyone while entire months are pre-empted by the state for their tests. I've said it before: I signed on to be a teacher, not a test prep technician. The more experience I have in the field of education, the less satisfied I am with traditional tests as a means to measure what students have learned. It isn't just because of my own personal observation, although every year shows me more about how differently each child learns; we also have increasingly more information about the way the human brain functions. Tests have their place. In Latin, I need to know how much vocabulary a student has memorized, and tests are an easy way to find out.
Departure is opportunity for waterworks
City leaders say a change in management at Des Moines Water Works is a chance to explore money-saving ventures that could help keep metro-area rates down in the long run. The utility recently raised rates for Des Moines customers 3 percent, from $2.28 to $2.35 per 1,000 gallons, the second straight increase. Waterworks general manager L.D. McMullen retired in December after about 30 years with the utility. .
Councilman MikeK Recalls Knievel Action Figure
Top: Young MikeK playing with Evel Knievel action figure; bottom: MikeK receives inspiration from his childhood friends before leaving for a Coeur d'Alene City Council meeting. I had a classic Evel Knievel motorcycle riding action figure when I was a kid. The stunts my brothers and I would stage for that motorcycle toy were legendary (riding out a second story window, chasing the dog around the house without getting chewed to ribbons, you name it). RIP Evel. I wonder what happened to Steve Austin, the Six Million Dollar Man who played the role of Evel's arch-nemesis in the boyhood action figure wars?/Councilman MikeK. Question: What was your favorite action figure/doll when you were little? .
Healing through music and nature
She also has sung for her supper on the streets of New Orleans. And now, Fae lives in a yurt and works on a farm on the San Juan Ridge, milking goats for a living. It's in such contrasts that Fae's art and healing both are rooted. Once trained by the dean of the Hartford Conservatory of Music, Fae now wakes up at dawn, makes her coffee on a wood stove, then spends her day feeding chickens, goats and rabbits. She milks four goats and feeds a newborn kid with its mother's milk in a bottle. "I intend to live close to the earth for the rest of my life," Fae said. "It's the responsibility of our generation to protect the earth and seek ways to live in harmony with our Mother Earth." In her modest home, Fae has altars to Lakshmi, Green Tara, Aphrodite and Isis - forms of the divine feminine from different cultures.

July 2006
I know in my head I should be packing the car, making last minute arrangements and checking to be sure I haven’t forgotten anything. I am especially antsy to get going this year since last summer I spent here at home after breaking my leg in 3 places. But at least this year, I am healthy, and ready to go. So until September I need to keep the bags by the door and just chill, until its my time to leave for the Cape. Have a great August all, I will miss you, but I will be coming soon. .
Chidambaram cold-shoulders UT
The total outlay of budget estimate for Chandigarh for this fiscal has been rather disappointing, with a marginal increase of just Rs 12.63 crore from 2006-07 revised estimate. Finance Minister P. Chidambaram today hiked the Union Territorys budget outlay for 2007-08 to Rs 1102.63 crore. The revised estimate for 2006-07 had been Rs 1090 crore. In fact, the outlay for housing and urban development under the non-plan outlay has gone down considerably, from Rs 55.34 crore in the revised estimate of 2006-07 to Rs 34.82 crore during this fiscal. Besides this, the finance minister also did not come up with any specific provisions or schemes for the benefit of the Union Territory. The budgetary outlay for 2007-08 includes Rs 267.63 crore as planned and Rs 835 crore as non-planned budget.
Building An Appetite
IT'S YET ANOTHER PICTURE-PERFECT DAY AT THE PINEHILLS in Plymouth, and here in the community's Summerhouse, nine happy residents are chatting over crudites and pita chips. The Summerhouse is actually the sales and administrative center, the place where prospective home buyers begin scoping out neighborhoods in this nearly 3,200-acre planned development. As with everything else here, however, its faintly nostalgic facade - white clapboard with porch and cupola - melts into a landscape painstakingly fashioned as a designer version of classic old New England. The residents nestled on sofas in the lodgelike great room this fall afternoon are part of a focus group put together by the Pinehills marketing staff. Mainly women zooming through their retirement (one says she just returned from Amalfi, another announces a Vineyard cycling trip), they are here to let loose on the topic of food shopping: what they like about supermarkets, what really drives them crazy, and, most important, what they expect from The Market at Pinehills when it opens this spring.
Dolan still has confidence in Knicks coach Thomas
The Suns' Grant Hill on how Orlando has been revitalized under coach Stan Van Gundy: "We didn't get the right coaching there. I think we under-performed the last few years." Nice slap at former Magic coach Brian Hill, who is now an assistant in New Jersey helping Lawrence Frank do the same thing to the Nets. Has Shaq's star finally faded? With fan voting concluding today, Shaquille O'Neal's streak making an All-Star roster appears all but over. Orlando's Dwight Howard has a 2-1 lead in the voting, and Toronto's Chris Bosh is expected to be selected by coaches as the reserve center. O'Neal has been selected to the All-Star Game every year there has been one during his 15-year career. The exception was the lockout-shortened 1999 season. Heat coach Pat Riley is perhaps the only person in the NBA who believes Shaq deserves consideration based on his body of work.
