| 'That takes a lot for a man to do that'
Although he said "I'm not a martyr or anything like that," but there was a sacrificial quality to his decision — that Odom and his 400-plus wins as a coach had put aside his reputation for the sake of his players. "Yeah, I see it as kind of like that," said junior guard Zam Fredrick, who transferred to USC to be closer to his home in Calhoun County. "He's taking it on himself and taking himself out of it. That takes a lot for a man to do that. That says a lot about him." During an hour-long news conference, Odom echoed for the second time the story that, on the way home from the team's upset win at Arkansas on Wednesday, he overheard the conversation of a couple of players. While they weren't critical of South Carolina's fans, per se, Odom said they were envious of the road environments at Arkansas and Vanderbilt.

The NRC has a defined set of regulatory practices, knowledge and expertise specific to each activity in the nuclear material cycle to address safety and security issues. Approximately 20 percent of the Nation's electricity is generated by the 104 NRC-licensed commercial nuclear reactors operating in 31 States (see Figure 3). Since 1994, nuclear electric generation has increased by approximately 22 percent. The NRC oversees 4,369 licenses for medical, academic, industrial and general uses of nuclear materials (see Figure 4). The agency conducts approximately 1,500 health and safety inspections of its nuclear materials licensees annually. In addition, the 34 Agreement States oversee 17,807 licenses. These Agreement States have assumed the majority of regulatory responsibilities for overseeing the activities of industrial, medical, and other small users of nuclear material within their borders.
U-M deal also has $4 million buyout
The university will also contribute an unspecified amount toward his retirement fund and provide him with two cars, plus paid insurance, according to the agreement. Former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, who retired in November, earned $1,770,535.50 in overall compensation during the final year of his contract. Rodriguez could earn an additional $300,000 if he wins a national championship at Michigan. He can earn $200,000 if the Wolverines appear in a Bowl Championship Series game. Also Friday, Rodriguez received a $287,000 incentive payment from West Virginia for goals reached during the 2007 season. Among the incentives he reached this season was a one-time $150,000 payment for winning the Big East championship and receiving a BCS berth, and $25,000 for finishing in the top 10.
S.C. or else for Thompson
The issue that he hears about most on the campaign trail is illegal immigration. But voters also are concerned about a variety of other issues, such as the war in Iraq, radical Islam, health care, the nuclear threat posed by Iran and the political turmoil in Pakistan, he said. Wherever he goes, his message is the same - that he is the only candidate who has fought consistently for the issues that matter to conservatives, things such as national security, tax cuts, balanced budgets and gun owners' rights. "I've been fighting for these things for a long time," Thompson said. The other Republican candidates "have had to adapt their positions, bring them up to date, shall we say. Where they have been in times past, I have not." Judging from the size and enthusiasm of the crowds that show up at his events, Thompson is convinced that his message is getting through.
Dealer's choice for Smith
Bill Smith is not afraid to trade Johan Santana. Nor is he afraid to hold on to him for as long as possible. The Minnesota Twins rookie general manager with Portsmouth, N.H., roots has been through a few rebuilding programs in his 22 years in the organization, and though he is new to the job of general manager, there's a good chance that neither Mr. Epstein, Mr. Minaya, nor Mr. Cashman is going to snooker this Winnacunnet High grad. Smith has played it close to the vest with the Santana trade talks. He realizes he has the most valuable commodity in baseball in a two-time Cy Young Award winner, still only 29 years old. While he fully acknowledges that he's more of a baseball administrator than a scout or judge of talent, what he's heard from the Mets, Yankees, and Red Sox so far doesn't compel him to trade.

The times they are a changin
Before this summer of political change, few voters could name most of the opposition parties now vying for their votes, let alone name their chiefs. Come September 7, voters will not only need to know their names, but will have probably had to have looked into their electoral platforms to see whether they offer more than reviving the tradition of the tarboush or the building of an Arab Nuclear City. More importantly, theyll have to decide which candidates seem capable of turning their promises into realities. .
