Administering Pain

One thing that is almost always overlooked in assessing the value and the rewards of a 401(k) plan are the plan administrative fees that are charged to the participants. The largest enemies to your long-term savings through a 401(k) plan are excessive fees by the selected mutual funds. Another set of fees also is circling around your retirement funds, nibbling away at your savings and nearly invisible to the naked eye. These are the fees associated with running the 401(k) plan itself.

Participants in 401(k) plans are currently not adequately informed about the fees associated with the day-to-day operational costs of running increasingly more complex plans. These fees include the costs of mailings and other record-keeping, telephone voice response systems, daily valuation services, educational seminars, retirement planning software -- and all the rest of the clutter.

Otis Federal Credit Union: As strong as its members
In April of 1954, Otis (Division) Federal Credit Union was formed to provide financial services to paper mill workers in Jay, Maine. It was started with 11 members and $55 dollars in assets. By the time of their first annual meeting in January of 1955, membership had grown to 261 members and $9,000 in assets. According to the recently rediscovered minutes of that first meeting, the treasurer was to be paid $250 over the course of the year for expenses and salary and the board of directors had the discretion to cut that amount if needed.

Councilman MikeK Recalls Knievel Action Figure

Top: Young MikeK playing with Evel Knievel action figure; bottom: MikeK receives inspiration from his childhood friends before leaving for a Coeur d'Alene City Council meeting.

I had a classic Evel Knievel motorcycle riding action figure when I was a kid. The stunts my brothers and I would stage for that motorcycle toy were legendary (riding out a second story window, chasing the dog around the house without getting chewed to ribbons, you name it). RIP Evel. I wonder what happened to Steve Austin, the Six Million Dollar Man who played the role of Evel's arch-nemesis in the boyhood action figure wars?/Councilman MikeK.

Question: What was your favorite action figure/doll when you were little?

Chidambaram cold-shoulders UT

The total outlay of budget estimate for Chandigarh for this fiscal has been rather disappointing, with a marginal increase of just Rs 12.63 crore from 2006-07 revised estimate.

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram today hiked the Union Territorys budget outlay for 2007-08 to Rs 1102.63 crore. The revised estimate for 2006-07 had been Rs 1090 crore.

In fact, the outlay for housing and urban development under the non-plan outlay has gone down considerably, from Rs 55.34 crore in the revised estimate of 2006-07 to Rs 34.82 crore during this fiscal. Besides this, the finance minister also did not come up with any specific provisions or schemes for the benefit of the Union Territory.

The budgetary outlay for 2007-08 includes Rs 267.63 crore as planned and Rs 835 crore as non-planned budget.

Grieving Father Tells Of Nightmare

Brian Aim, 51, said he, his wife Peggy, also 51, and son Alan, 23, have been living through a constant nightmare ever since officers broke the news at his Orkney home.

"It's felt as though we're watching a bad film on the television and could we not change channels?" he said. "But we're stuck on this channel for the rest of our lives.

"We just wish that we could change over, instead of this absolute nightmare that we're going through."

He said the full reality of what has happened would not sink in until Karen's body is returned home to Orkney. "We don't believe it's happened yet," said Mr Aim, who works as a joiner in Holm, Orkney.

"It's beginning to register now that the house is half-full of flowers and sympathy cards. We are beginning to realise something is happening."

Mr Aim described how his daughter had "landed on her feet" on her second visit to New Zealand, where she had been working at a glass-blowing gallery in the resort town.
