K-State women roll on

MANHATTAN — They downplayed the significance of possibly cracking The Associated Press Top 25 poll all week long, maintaining that the focus should be on the next opponent — Colorado — rather than a ranking.

But after defeating the No. 25-ranked Buffaloes 67-60 Saturday night at Bramlage Coliseum, the Kansas State women's basketball team will have to accept what's coming their way.

Mich. couple killed in accident leave $1.6 million to surprised ...

And it didn't matter to them if you had one dollar or 10, they'd be your friend."

Judging by the amount of money they doled out, the couple had many friends, including fellow parishioners at Alto United Methodist Church, where many of the beneficiaries are members.

"We, the whole church, are obviously grateful to them, and grateful to God that he gave them to us," said the Rev. Dean Bailey.

Added Bailey's wife, Jan: "They left a lot to the people they'd loved, and I think everybody was surprised."

That included the Baileys, who were notified that the Hatches had left the church about $50,000 toward a fund trying to raise $800,000 for a new building. Their gift, said the pastor, represents "about a year's worth of our fundraising capability."

Campaigns scramble for support in Nevada's new caucus territory

LAS VEGAS — The fight for top-billing in Saturday's Nevada Democratic presidential caucus has become much like its model in Iowa: an hour-by-hour test of who has the best organization.

But unlike Iowa, Nevada never really has done this before, and not on the scale an early caucus date requires. No one knows for sure what the best organization should look like in a state with two major population centers and vast stretches of desert in between.

Healing through music and nature

She also has sung for her supper on the streets of New Orleans.

And now, Fae lives in a yurt and works on a farm on the San Juan Ridge, milking goats for a living.

It's in such contrasts that Fae's art and healing both are rooted.

Once trained by the dean of the Hartford Conservatory of Music, Fae now wakes up at dawn, makes her coffee on a wood stove, then spends her day feeding chickens, goats and rabbits. She milks four goats and feeds a newborn kid with its mother's milk in a bottle.

"I intend to live close to the earth for the rest of my life," Fae said. "It's the responsibility of our generation to protect the earth and seek ways to live in harmony with our Mother Earth."

In her modest home, Fae has altars to Lakshmi, Green Tara, Aphrodite and Isis - forms of the divine feminine from different cultures.

Grand jury foreman irate in Supreme Court justice arson case

HOUSTON (AP) — In a case some say reveals political backscratching at the courthouse, a Texas Supreme Court justice saw his arson-related indictment thrown out Friday at the request of a scandal-plagued, but fellow Republican, prosecutor.

The move outraged the grand jury foreman, who threatened to reconvene the panel and issue the charges again.

Collier church finds town's sweet tooth with holiday cookie sale

Another evening they baked cut-out and thumbprint cookies.

"We're not as big as the large churches where people pick cookies out of bins, but we have a great time," said Mrs. Riedl.

Besides the popular and traditional nut rolls, about half of which have already been spoken for, this year's sale will include, in part, Oreo bonbons, chocolate chips, cherry bonbons, ladylocks, pecan tassies, sugar cookies, caramel cups and snowbells plus a separate table of other holiday favorites, such as brownies, banana bread, hardtack candy, blueberry-lemon coffee cake, pumpkin rolls and caramel chocolate-dipped apples.

A box of about 30 assorted cookies will sell for $10, and prices on the individual items will vary.

"I hope it keeps growing every year," Mrs.

She set out as she had done every Sunday afternoon for years. She locked her door, turned to the weather, and held the hand rail as she stepped carefully down from the porch. Once on the ground she adjusted her hat on her gray head. As this was a winter day in the Christmas season, a cold day, she also adjusted her coat. Had it been raining, she would have pulled a large lawn and leaf bag, as if it were a poncho, over her head and upper body. Most times she shouldered her hand bag. This day she also shouldered a bulging plastic shopping bag. She walked along the dirt road that would lead her to the paved road that would lead her to the highway. Her only company was her shadow, small and indistinct at her feet. She walked without the deliberate care of someone unfamiliar with the terrain, but neither was her gait quick.
