Salmond ditches election pledge on police

Alex Salmond has admitted his government will not fulfil its election promise to recruit 1000 extra police officers, prompting accusations that he had betrayed the people of Scotland.

The First Minister and Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill have been under intense pressure from opponents and leaders of rank-and-file officers to honour a manifesto commitment to raise the policing complement by 1000, a pledge Mr Salmond also made to the Scottish Police Federation conference when he cited a £78m fund.

Earlier this month, The Herald revealed ministers had asked a senior civil servant to find efficiency savings to help them meet their promise, which led to a rebuttal from the administration.

Yesterday, however, during rowdy exchanges at the Scottish Parliament, the First Minister said his government would instead boost numbers through recruiting some new officers, but also by persuading some not to take early retirement and by freeing up others from desk duties.

Come on Megson & Bolton Board get your money spent on a good un!! .

Clinton the right choice

One word can sum up George W. Bush's presidency: incompetence.

For seven years this nation has been subjected to an administration riddled with abject failures of leadership -- Hurricane Katrina and the Iraq war instantly come to mind. We also have had an administration infested with cronyism and drenched in secrecy.

The American people naturally are demanding change, and the 2006 election was the first evidence of this, as Democrats regained control of both houses of Congress. But the Democrats hold a majority too slim to override vetoes, and Bush and Senate Republicans have obstructed Democratic legislation.

This year's presidential election offers an opportunity to change course and get our country moving in the right direction again. And, this Saturday, Nevadans will have their say.

NIST Admits Total Collapse Of Twin Towers Unexplainable Submitted by ...

Larry Silverstein, the landlord, said that he had ordered the fire department to "pull" the building. "Pull" is a term used for controlled demolition, which would explain why a building that was not hit by a plane and did not have fires large enough to melt steel and initiate a total collapse, did indeed collapse at freefall speed, just like Buildings One and Two. That's why the NIST report doesn't mention Bldg.7, because no plane hit it, so if it could collapse at freefall speed without having been hit by a plane, so could any other building. Particularly if the building had been loaded with explosives beforehand and an order was given to pull it.

No other buildings in history have collapsed at freefall speed due to fires. Much larger fires have blazed for days in much less sturdy buildings without causing them to collapse.

Political background to the CPE protests

We are reposting the following series of articles on the revolt of the French working class in November-December 1995 in the hope that it will help to clarify the political background to the present upheaval in that country. The ongoing revolt by millions of youth and workers is a further response to the effort by the French ruling class to slash or eliminate entirely the social gains made in decades of struggle.

In November-December 1995, the working class revolted against efforts by the right-wing regime of Prime Minister Alain Juppé to “reform” the social security system, just as today the government of Dominique de Villepin is “reforming” France’s labor laws. In 1995 millions of workers, led by the transport workers in particular, rejected the claims made by the government and the media and recognized the maneuver for what it was—an attempt to shift the burden of the social costs on to the back of the working population.
