| The times they are a changin
Before this summer of political change, few voters could name most of the opposition parties now vying for their votes, let alone name their chiefs. Come September 7, voters will not only need to know their names, but will have probably had to have looked into their electoral platforms to see whether they offer more than reviving the tradition of the tarboush or the building of an Arab Nuclear City. More importantly, theyll have to decide which candidates seem capable of turning their promises into realities. .

Trust me, there's nothing to talk about. This game is dire - as you might see by the "highlights" on Match of the Day tonight. 1845: "Judging by the Player Rater Nolan's having a top game - to anyone watching the match, should he have been taken off?"escavic on 606 .
Sights and sounds of a decaying Forth Road Bridge
We need to be investing in improvements to shared transportation systems - trains, buses, trams, car-pooling - rather than finding ways to accommodate more and more individual metal boxes for commuters. And we need to end the practice of building commuter belts and housing estates so far away from employment centres that commuting is necessary in the first place. .
Councilman MikeK Recalls Knievel Action Figure
Top: Young MikeK playing with Evel Knievel action figure; bottom: MikeK receives inspiration from his childhood friends before leaving for a Coeur d'Alene City Council meeting. I had a classic Evel Knievel motorcycle riding action figure when I was a kid. The stunts my brothers and I would stage for that motorcycle toy were legendary (riding out a second story window, chasing the dog around the house without getting chewed to ribbons, you name it). RIP Evel. I wonder what happened to Steve Austin, the Six Million Dollar Man who played the role of Evel's arch-nemesis in the boyhood action figure wars?/Councilman MikeK. Question: What was your favorite action figure/doll when you were little? .

Do you people even understand the issue?
Every government has failed with this portfolio. But Harper and crew have made the worst mistakes of all of them. Setting aside any issues of negligence and dereliction of duty, Harper's making this into a purely partisan attack on a civil servant - and the wrong one at that - is what makes the whole issue so foul. This is driven by pure ideology. But here's the best part: Harper's ideology and pettiness has cost him a tremendous opportunity to make his government look really good, the previous adminstration look really bad and present himself as a protector of the public interest. And he could even have built up some goodwill with the public service. This failure demonstrates that Harper and the CPC are unfit to govern. Anything. Mayor wants to strip suburbs' say in merger
Herenton, who began an unprecedented fifth term in office Tuesday, said in his speech to the Kiwanis Club at The Peabody that he's putting consolidation back on the "front burner." "Yes, I'm singing out of this choir book again," he said, calling the current city-county governmental structure "wasteful." Under the traditional Tennessee approach to consolidating governments, Herenton would have to follow the legal process set out by both the Tennessee Constitution and state statute -- a countywide referendum that requires separate majority votes of residents inside the city of Memphis and those outside the city limits in Shelby County, including residents of the suburban municipalities. If consolidation wins inside the city but is rejected among Shelby voters outside the city, or vice versa, it fails to win approval.
